Corruption countermeasures and prevention

Corruption countermeasures and prevention is one of the priority tasks of TNK-BP. The company views the inadmissibility of corruption as a vital component of its effectiveness and sustainable development.

TNK-BP was the first Russian oil and gas company to join the “Partnering Against Corruption” initiative (PACI) put forward by the World Economic Forum and successfully implements the provisions of this document in its daily business practice.

Since 2005 the company has been realizing a plan to reduce corruption risks. Since 2007 implementation and control of this plan have been within the scope of the manager for corruption risk mitigation, such position having been created at TNK-BP.

The result of these steps was the creation at TNK-BP of a multi-level system of corruption risk mitigation. This system is reflected in the Code of Business Policies and a series of TNK-BP policies, standards and procedures which closely regulate management duties in the sphere of business ethics and the action procedures for all levels of management and company employees in the event of a corruption risk, as well as measures to expose and prevent any displays of corruption.

The provisions of the corporate normative documents in the field of corruption countermeasures should be observed at all times not only by TNK-BP employees, but also by partners of the company who enter into contractual relations with it. Hence, the standard procedures for executing deals and contracts made by TNK-BP with external contractors and suppliers provide for the obligatory inclusion in such contracts of so-called anti-corruption clauses which forbid any corrupt actions on the part of all parties to the agreement and lay down sanctions up to and including cancellation of the deal.

In 2006 around one thousand line managers from the TNK-BP corporate centre underwent special training in the implementation of business ethics. The company also conducted an ethical certification, during which more than 250 senior managers at TNK-BP signed a declaration of compliance with business ethics. Furthermore, a series of seminars were held for TNK-BP top managers on the interpretation and practice of applying anti-corruption laws and best practice in this area.

TNK-BP’s efforts in countering corruption have been highly appraised by PACI and various authoritative independent organizations.
