TNK-BP is focused on addressing three main environmental issues: land remediation, utilization of associated gas, and pipeline integrity. Significant progress is being made in each of these goals.
At inception, the company inherited a significant amount of fields, that had been polluted by previous license holders. Since 2005, a program to remediate legacy pollution and decommission old pipes has been in place. Over 1,700 hectares of land have been completely remediated and handed over to the relevant authorities.
The company continues to implement programs to increase the associated gas utilization rate across the company’s assets. Projects include construction of gas gathering systems, expansion of gas processing capacity, and construction of power plants that use associated gas directly. Investing capital in associated gas utilization projects will reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere, thus benefiting the environment, and allow the company to monetize their significant associated gas resources.
Since 2003 TNK-BP has been a major investor in the inspection, replacement, and corrosion inhibition of pipelines that total approximately 25,000 km. The integrity program which is being implemented across the company constitutes replacing pipelines in poor condition and introducing new technologies to protect existing pipelines. The company plans to replace 4,500 km of pipes and inhibit 50% of its pipelines by 2012.
