Board of directors

The TNK-BP Board of Directors consists of four representatives from each of the two shareholder groups and three independent directors. On behalf of the shareholders, the Board performs the following key functions:

  • Provision of strategic direction to TNK-BP management
  • Review of strategy implementation and company performance
  • Appointment and evaluation of performance of the CEO and other key executives
  • Ensuring corporate compliance to the highest ethical business standards
  • Exercise of financial controls
  • Advice on major acquisitions, divestitures and capital expenditure programs

The Board has established three committees, the Audit Committee, the Compensation Committee and the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Committee .

  • Mikhail Fridman

    Mikhail Fridman

    Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO. Mikhail Fridman graduated with High Honors from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys. After the creation of Alfa-Eco Company in 1988, Mr. Fridman played a key role in transforming Alfa-Eco into one of the most powerful and reliable financial—industrial establishments in Russia, Alfa Group Consortium, making him one of Russia’s most influential business leaders. Mikhail Fridman headed the list of the 1,000 most professional Russian managers, compiled by the Managers Association together with the publishing house Kommersant in December 2001. >>

  • Viktor F. Vekselberg

    Viktor F. Vekselberg

    Executive Director In 1979, Mr. Vekselberg graduated with High Honors from Moscow Institute of Transport Engineers and later went on to complete his Master’s Degree and Ph.D. in mathematics. Victor Vekselberg established managing company “Renova” and became it’s General Director in 1990. At present time Vekselberg is a founder and current Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Renova Group. He engineered the historic 1996 merger that formed the Siberian-Urals Aluminum Company. From 1996 to 2003, he was President of the SUAL Group and, from January 2003 till April 2007, has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the SUAL Group. >>

  • Len Blavatnik

    Len Blavatnik

    Len Blavatnik holds a Masters degree from Columbia University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is the Founder, Chairman and President of Access Industries, a privately held, U.S. - based industrial group with long term strategic interests worldwide. Mr. Blavatnik serves as a director of numerous companies in the Access portfolio of investments including Basell Holdings B.V. >>

  • Alex Knaster

    Alex Knaster

    Alex Knaster holds a BS in electrical engineering and mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon University, an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Ph.D. in economics from the Russian Academy of Science. Mr. Knaster has had an extensive career in the finance industry having served as Managing Director and Partner at Simmons & Company (1985 — 1993); Managing Director at Bankers Trust Company (1993 — 1995); Managing Director, President and CEO of Credit Suisse First Boston in Russia and the CIS (1995 -1998); and as CEO of Alfa-Bank (1998—2004). Mr. Knaster has also served as General Director of Sidanco (2002 — 2003). >>

  • David Peattie

    David Peattie

    David Peattie holds a B.Sc (Hons.) degree and is a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. David joined BP in 1979 as a petroleum engineer, working in a series of technical positions in the North Sea, China, Australia and Papua New Guinea. In 1987, he moved into a new role as a commercial analyst, based in BP Exploration’s offices in London. In 1993, David moved to Antwerp in Belgium where he negotiated the sale of BP Nutrition. Following this, in 1995, David became Business Unit Leader of the Algeria/Southern Europe Gas Business. >>

  • Brian Gilvary

    Brian Gilvary

    Brian Gilvary is BP’s Deputy Group Chief Financial Officer (January 2010). His main responsibility is for Finance: a deployed function in the businesses, which also has independence in assuring the integrity and accuracy of our financial accounting and reporting activity. He is a member of the BP Group Financial Risk Committee. Prior to this Brian was the Chief Executive Officer of Integrated Supply & Trading, the commodity trading arm of BP and drove the transformation of the business through a major change process instilling a strong culture of Control and Compliance. He has served as a member of two of BP’s executive committees, Refining and Marketing (2002–2005) and Gas, Renewables, Supply and Trading (2005–2006). >>

  • Lord Robertson of Port Ellen

    Lord Robertson of Port Ellen

    Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors. Rt Hon Lord (George) Robertson of Port Ellen KT GCMG Hon FRSE PC served as Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) from 1999—2003 and was Defence Secretary of the United Kingdom from 1997—1999. He is a graduate in Economics (Hons) from the University of Dundee and was elected to the House of Commons (Lab, Hamilton) in 1978. He was re-elected five times and on his appointment to NATO was elevated to the House of Lords. >>

  • Michael Townshend

    Michael Townshend

    31 years in BP covering engineering, project management, operations, strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions. Posts range from projects and operations in Alaska, Australia, Holland, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Washington. In 2002 appointed CEO the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline and managing BP’s onshore business in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey including the South Caucasus gas pipeline. Moved to Oman in 2007 to set up the tight gas appraisal, then became BP President of Middle East and Pakistan. >>

  • Aleksandr Shokhin

    Aleksandr Shokhin

    Aleksandr Shokhin graduated from the Economics Faculty of Moscow State University. He is a Doctor of Economic Science and Professor. He began his career in 1974 in an economic research institute of the USSR State Planning Committee, before moving to the labor research institute of the USSR State Committee for Labor. He entered politics in 1987, and until 1991 worked as assistant for economic matters to Minister of Foreign Affairs of the USSR and head of the International Economic Relations Directorate. He was then appointed Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation. In the course of three years he held the positions of Minister of Labor and Employment, Minister of Economics and Chairman of the Russian Agency for International Cooperation and Development. >>
