Verknechonskneftegaz was established in April 2002. Its main activities are exploration, development and extraction of oil at the Verkhnechonskoe oil and gas-condensate field in the Katangskiy District of Irkutsk Region, 1100 km northeast from Irkutsk.
Regional geophysical work was performed at the location of the field from 1956 to 1976, and the project was launched in 1977. Five years later, as a result of seismic surveys, the field’s boundaries had been significantly expanded. Exploratory drilling began in 1979, followed by appraisal wells from 1983 to 1993. A total of 100 wells were drilled during the appraisal phase.
Commercial production at the Verkhnechonskoe field began on October 15th, 2008 and should achieve a plateau of 7—9 million tons per year in 2015—2016.
