General Public in Buryatia for Building a Pipeline From the Kovykta Gas Field Via the Republic’s Territory
On Monday public leaders of Buryatia approved of the East-Siberia Gas Company’s declaration of intensions to build a pipeline from the Kovykta gas field through the Republic’s territory and gasify the Republic. The majority of participants in the public hearings that took place in Ulan-Ude voted for the project’s approval, Buryatia’s government told ITAR-TASS. The Republic’s gasification project is to be implemented within 2006—2008. It envisions gas production rate in Buryatia from 700 mcma to 1,5 bcma. The use of gas fuel in its energy and public-service sector will help the Republic increase economic growth, reduce amounts of pollutant emissions into the atmosphere. Up to one thousand working places will be created during the project’s implementation before 2008. Annual tax payments from the project to Burytia’s budget will reach up to 1,5 bln roubles by 2010. The amount of investments into the project exceeds 2 bln roubles with the payback period of up to nine years.
The declaration of intensions outlines the project’s ecological component because the pipeline, going round Baikal in the south, will escape the watershed area of the unique lake, but will go through the territiory of Tunkynsky National Park.
The decision upon withdrawing the status of some parts of the Park as being environmentally protected for the gas pipeline’s construction will be taken on the federal level. The Kovykta project prepared by RUSIA Petroleum, TNK-BP Management, East-Siberia Gas Company envisions gas export opportunities to APR countries.
