Money Can''t Buy Experience

June 28, 2004, Monday

A talk with TNK-BP Ukraine President Alexander Gorodetsky on TNK-BP''s establishment and developmental prospects. "As for me, I estimate BP''s entering the Ukrainian and Russian business very positively. One should understand that BP is a company with over 100 years of experience on the petroleum market. It has gone a development route on the European market, and created active businesses in emerging economies. We can judge about BP''s enormous experience by the expertise received by our professionals in the field of refining, management, the retail network formation and management system. By the by, BP''s Moscow-based retail network is the most successful in Russia. We expect something of that kind to happen in Ukraine soon. And, last but not least, one of the key factors is cheap and, which is equally important, "long" financial resources BP can offer to the Ukrainian business development," Mr. Alexander Gorodetskiy said. Speaking on corporate management after the British partner''s arrival, TNK-BP Ukraine President noted: "Of course, the managerial style accepted at BP differs from Russian and Ukrainian one. We got accustomed to working on the "crisis managers" principle when decisions are sometimes take in the absence of comprehensive, exhaustive information, on the basis of intuition and experience, whereas BP normally studies information in-depth and from all angles and then makes deliberate decision on its basis. A new performance assessment technique, constant comparison of performance results with those of competitors and even those of other business units within the company – this is a new thing implemented after the merger..." Alexander Gorodetsky also commented on TNK-BP Ukraine''s establishment and its first performance results as follows: "The key result is improvement of communications among the holding''s different business units... TNK-BP Ukraine has become the single corporate center, which is tasked with structuring the management system for various Ukraine-based facilities, to the extent it conformed to the existing market requirements." On top of that, Alexander Gorodetsky noted that BP''s brand promotion in Ukraine is under consideration. The use of TNK''s brand that proved itself both in Russia and in Ukraine will be continued.
